|Tribulations, Hardships, and Difficulties: Supplications and Advice
Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, SunniPath Academy Teacher
I just wanted to ask you to please remember to specifically make dua for myself and my family as we are facing some very difficult times… are there any particular duas in times of tribulation?
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
Abu Malik al-Ash`ari (Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,
“Purity is half of faith. Thanking Allah (‘Alhamdu liLlah’) fills the Scales. Glorifying Allah and thanking Him (‘Subhan Allah wa’l Hamdu liLlah’) fill that which between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is light. Charity is proof. Patience is illumination. And the Qur’an is a proof for you or against you. People awake, and either purchase their soul’s safety or perdition.” [Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Maja, and Ahmad]
Our life has two halves: the outward and inward. Allah and His Beloved Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) have given us guidance in both regards.
Outwardly, we are to live out our live by taking the best and most effective means (worldly and spiritual), according to the standards of the Shariah of the Beloved of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Inwardly, we are to submit to Allah’s Command: things only unfold as Allah Wills them. Our duty is to turn out hearts towards Allah.
The scholars tell us that:
When He gives us blessings, our duty is to be grateful to Him.
When He sends us hardships, our duty is to be patient.
When He tries us with sin, our duty is to repent.
When He gifts us with acts of good, our duty is to thank Him.
Anas (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to say,
Allahumma inni a`udhu bika min al-`ajzi wa’l kasal
Wa’l jubni wa’l haram
Wa a`udhu bika min fitnat’il mahya wa’l mamaat
Wa a`udhu bika min `adhab al-qabr.
“O Lord, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness,
Cowardliness and feebleness;
I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death,
And seek refuge in You from punishment of the grave.”
[Bukhari and Muslim]
Humanity was in darkness and bewilderment, and Allah sent us light in the form of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) , the Qur’an, (peace and blessings be upon him), and the guidance of Islam they represent. To illuminate our lives, and to dispel the darknesses of distress, we must turn to the light Allah has sent, by returning to the way and example of the Messenger; to the Qur’an by recitation and reflection; and to the guidance of the Shariah in faith, practice, and spirituality.
And Allah alone gives success.
